Qualifications and Experience

I have a professional background in social work, counselling and psychotherapy and, following a five year training in Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy, am registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council as a Psychoanalytical Psychotherapist.  I am also registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist.

As a social worker and social work manager I worked principally in Children’s and Mental Health services in the public and voluntary sectors in England and Scotland. From the early 1980’s I also worked in the counselling service of the former Scottish Institute of Human Relations (SIHR) contributing to and leading teaching programmes in psychodynamic counselling, psychoanalysis and personality disorders.

After training in psychoanalytical psychotherapy I have practised as a psychotherapist both privately and in the NHS where I worked especially within the area of mental health.  I have been involved in the supervision and training of professionals in health and social work teams, devising and contributing to short courses for adolescents, adults and older adults in mental health in the SIHR and in Borders NHS.

For some years I have been involved as Director of Training in the Scottish Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists (SAPP) training of Scottish Psychoanalytical Psychotherapists (STPP) through to registration with the British Psychoanalytic Council.

My qualifications are:

  • Certificate in Social Work
  • Post Qualifying Certificate in Social Work
  • MSc. Social Work
  • Registered Psychoanalytical Psychotherapist, 2000

I am bound by the Codes of Ethics and Complaints Procedures of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), the Scottish Association of Psychoanalytical Psychotherapists (SAPP) and the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
